Hello Journeyers, how are you all doing?
Well, I just got home (at the original apartment), checked the mail, and saw something mixed in with the usual junk letters and ads.
Within was an envelope, that just has our apartment number on it. Within, was a letter for whom it may concern, stating that we need to have one, the hallway cleared by our apartment by the 12th. That any trash should be tossed into the dumpster outback. Two, it also stated that since we haven't paid rent since 2019, and that we don't have a legal lease, it is considered squatting, and it's illegal in New York State. So, we have to vacate the premises by the end of the month.
Well, here I'm gonna state several facts why the majority of this is funny yet not.
For instance, they want us to clear out the trash. That means that we have to go all the way downstairs, around the building, and then toss it into the dumpster when it's more convenient to just open the one hallway that's blocked and go through there to the back of the building and just toss it down into the dumpster. It would save a lot of time and energy.
The next thing I would point out is the fact that whoever wrote this letter, which didn't have a signature or anything, doesn't know the full facts of the situation at hand. Since we only have a verbal lease with the landlord as well as a verbal agreement at the time to pay when can. But that was before he stopped the gas and water utilities back in May of 2019. In December of 2019, we had spoken to the Zoning Director who has informed us that we don't need to pay until the utilities are back on. So, the landlord had plenty of time to work on things. This means, by all means, we do have the right to be there.
And finally, I don't know if the person knows that this eviction notice is very illegal, for in New York State or anywhere, an eviction notice is only done through the courts and is handed to the eviction recipient by an officer of the law.
So it is funny that they want to do this but didn't do it right, but not so funny cause they want to evict during the winter seasons and in the middle of a second or third wave of the pandemic.
Well, now that we have a place, we really don't have to worry so much about ending up in the streets.
Many blessings to you all and stay in touch as we progress through this new chapter in our lives.
